Most people think balance problems come from weak muscles. But in practice — and especially in nervous‑system‑based work — weakness is almost never the real issue.
Balance is fundamentally a sensory-motor process, not a strength process.
Your nervous system is constantly gathering information from your feet, ankles, pelvis, ribs, eyes, and inner ear. It uses that information to predict where you are in space and how much effort you need to stay upright. When the sensory map is clear, balance feels natural. When the map is noisy, incomplete, or distorted, balance feels like work.
This is why people can be strong, fit, and active… yet still feel unsteady.
In Feldenkrais, we don’t “train” balance — we clarify the sensory-motor system that balance depends on. Through gentle exploration, people begin to notice:
How their weight actually moves through their feet
How their ribs and spine participate in small shifts
How their eyes and head influence orientation
How unnecessary muscular effort interferes with stability
