A Feldenkrais back pain relief evaluation session

The Feldenkrais Center of San Diego is unique, and NOT a traditional medical practice.

The Feldenkrais Method of physical therapy is not taught in Medical School. Nor is Feldenkrais mentioned in Residency training for physicians. Becoming a Feldenkrais practitioner involves completing and graduating from an accredited, 4-year Feldenkrais Teacher Training Program. Dr. Malkoffs’ program was directed by Dr. Mark Reese, PhD, and she was certified to professionally teach and practice the Feldenkrais Method in 1998.

Dr Malkoff has always loved school and learning. She was accepted to the Pre-Med program at UC Irvine at 16 years old. In 1980, she earned a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences at UCIrvine with cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. After completing her Medical Degree at UC Irvine in 1985, she took post-doctoral training in Family Medicine at UCLA. She was a practicing Family Medicine physician for 22 years.

Dr. Malkoff, MD earned a Master of Public Health degree at San Diego State University's Graduate School of Public Health in 2002, with the hopes of doing solid research on the effectiveness of the Feldenkrais Method in treating common pain syndromes. Sadly, this research was not funded.

She has taken additional post-doctoral training in the fields of physical medicine, rehabilitation, neuroscience, psychology, and nutrition. Certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health and Fitness Instructor, Dr. Malkoff is also one of very few Medical Doctors in the U.S. to be trained as a Feldenkrais Teacher and Practitioner. Specializing in acute and chronic pain relief, and providing pain relief treatment for seniors, athletes, and children, she has owned and operated her private practice for 37 years.

Feldenkrais Method and surfing

Lori Malkoff, MD, MPH has pursued a lifetime commitment to having fun while staying fit and healthy. As a San Diego youth, she was an age-group swimming champion. While attending undergraduate and medical schools at UC Irvine, she was a nationally-ranked athlete in swimming, water polo, and surfing. A sponsored surfing professional since 1989, she continues to really enjoy surfing and compete now and then. She also loves to golf, swim, and find new things to do and places to see in her beautiful hometown of San Diego.
